The Chairman’s Report (2023/2024 session)

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) has performed another successful year in 2023/2024 on its commitment to serving Quality Professionals during the coronavirus pandemic in Hong Kong. This report includes the Society organization, major events and activities held online and on-site in the fiscal year ending 30th June 2024 as follows.

Section B. Governance

In the 2023/2024 session, the Executive Committee met four times (online and on-site) to plan and review the activities organized by the Society. One of these meetings was dedicated to formulating the plan of activities in the year under review, which were 07th October 2023, 02nd March 2024, 4th May 2024 and 06th July 2024, respectively.

Section C. Activities

HKSQ activities held in 2023/2024 and summarized below:

These activities were well received by our members and other participants.

1. Membership, Membership Drive and Professional Certifications

Up to the end of July 2024, the Society has 112 individual members (with voting rights) and 12 (no voting right) Corporate Members. These 112 individual members consist of 68 Ordinary Members, 35 Senior Members and 9 Fellows.

A membership drive was conducted by Dr. Lotto LAI through a program named “ISE 549 – Management of Innovation and Technology” under the MSc in Knowledge and Technology Management in PolyU held on 27th September 2023. and a program named “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” in CityU on 30th Oct 2023. Furthermore, Dr. Jane WONG (Chairman) and Dr. Aaron TONG (former Chairman) were invited by Professor Howard CHEUNG to provide Career Talk for Industrial Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) of the University of Hong Kong students on 12th Apr 2024, we introduced your organization and TQM (our Corporate member) how to support students for preparing themselves before graduate. And Dr. Jane WONG (Chairman) and Ms. Kelly LIU (Hon. Secretary) are invited by the Hong Kong Hang Seng University (HKHSU) on 30th April 2024 to attend Award Ceremony of Six Sigma Green Bell Certificate (SSGBC) issued by ASQxHKSQ to HKHSU students and introduces your organization to students as membership drive. In addition, HKSQ served as consultant to advise Samsonite on the Certified Factory Auditor (CFA) Program for the company’s suppliers in China. Dr. Jane WONG (your Chairman) and Dr. Aaron TONG (former Chairman) audited delivery of the CFA training and promoted HKSQ to participants of the course held in Samsonite’s Ningbo Office from 15th to 17th June 2024.

The Society has 84 Certified Six Sigma Green Belts, 4 Certified Six Sigma Black Belts and NO Certified Quality Engineers on its registers of certified quality professionals.

2. Workshops / Training Courses

HKSQ served as consultant to advise Samsonite on the Certified Factory Auditor (CFA) Program for the company’s suppliers in China. Dr. Jane WONG (your Chairman) and Dr. Aaron TONG (former Chairman) audited delivery of the CFA training and promoted HKSQ to participants of the course held in Samsonite’s Ningbo Office from 15th to 17th June 2024.

3. Seminars

Events Organized by HKSQ:

  • A Seminar on “Minus Quality Assurance (-QA) (減法品質保證)” was held on 18th August 2023 by our former Chairman Dr. Aaron TONG.
  • November 2023 was Quality Month. Two seminar/webinar were organized, which were “Seminar on ISO50001 and ISO55001” delivered by Dr. Aaron TONG (former Chairman) on 10th Nov 2023, and “Digitalisation” by Dr. Jack WU on 24th Nov 2023, respectively.
  • Your organization and Corporate member – TQM organized seminar named “Quality Considerations on Cell Banks” on 8th Dec 2023, CQI was supporting organization and the speaker is our Exco member Ms. Minda CHIANG. Advanced therapy products (ATP), such as CAR-T and stem cells, provide an exciting new class of therapeutics. As the number of cell banks both in development and approved continue to increase, this seminar is a fantastic way to learn more about the quality considerations in the industry, and the means to control associated risks and to ensure safe cell sources, product quality and patient safety.
  • Your organization organized Webinar named “Understanding Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in Multifaceted Views” on 26th April 2024. It is collaborated with our corporate member – SGS, the webinar is to realize what ESG is and its latest trends in multifaceted views. The guest speaker is Ms. Zonta YUNG, who is Project Manager of Sustainability – Business Assurance in SGS.
  • Your organization and Intertek Hong Kong (Corporate Member) successfully co-organized the Webinar “Global Market Success: Expand Your Product Reach Globally – Ways to maximize your product expansion to untouched market”, attended by professionals across different industries on 21st May 2024.The guest speaker is Mr. Samson Leong, who is Senior Manager, Electrical, Intertek Hong Kong.

Events Supported by HKSQ:

The Society supported 6 quality-related events hosted by other organizations in the last fiscal year. We continued to support other local and international professional bodies in organizing seminars or symposia that align with our objectives to leverage the resources and allow members to join these activities at no cost or discounted prices.

4. Conferences

International Conferences:

  • The 8th World Summit of Chinese Quality (全球華人品質峰會) was organized by the Singapore Quality Institute (SQI) (新加坡质量学院) and pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (pre-WACQ – 全球华人品质联盟(筹)) on 21st September 2023. The theme was “People-oriented, Advancing with the Times, Artificial Intelligence and Quality Assurance”「以人为本,与时俱进,人工智能与品质保证」. The summit was held onsite at NTU@One-North Alumni House, Executive Centre. Dr Lotto LAI (former Chairman) and Ms Minda CHIANG joined the summit.
  • Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) Congress 2023 was held by Vietnam Quality Association of Ho Chi Minh City (VQAH) in the Vabis International College, Phy My, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Vietnam from 17th to 20th Oct 2023. The congress theme was “Quality Transforms with A.I. Booming”. Dr. Lotto LAI (former Chairman) and Ms. Minda CHIANG joined this summit.
  • The IAQ General Meeting was held on 15th & 16th May 2024 in San Diego, USA. Dr. Lotto LAI (former Chairman) joined the second day online.

Mainland China and Local Conferences:

  • The 5th China Quality Conference held in Chengdu from 1st to 2nd September 2023. The theme is “Quality Evolution and Cooperation in Economic Recovery”. Dr Jane WONG (Chairman) and Dr Aaron TONG (former Chairman) represented HKSQ to attend.
  • Aaron TONG (former Chairman) won an award from HKIE Innovation Merit, project named “Apply -QA in Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator” on 18th April 2024.

5. Study Mission / Technical Visit

  • Your organization organized a technical visit to Shenzhen Academy of Metrology & Quality Inspection (SMQ) (深圳市计量质量检测研究院) on 1st Dec 2023. In order to promote the reform of statutory institutions, Shenzhen Academy of Metrology & Quality Inspection (深圳市計量品質檢測研究院(簡稱深檢院)) wholly-owned established Shenzhen Academy of Metrology & Quality Inspection (Group) Co., Ltd. (深圳市計量品質檢測研究院(集團)有限責任公司(簡稱深檢集團)), further release the vitality of the Academy through market-oriented operations, escort the industrial layout of Shenzhen and even the Bay Area across the country, build Shenzhen’s high-tech producer service industry brand, become the leader in China’s quality service professional field and strive to become a world-class technical institution. After the visit, we visited the South Gate of Nantou Ancient City in Shenzhen, China. (南頭古城).
  • Your Chairman – Dr. Jane WONG, former Chairmans – Dr. KS Chin, Dr. Aaron TONG and Dr. Vincent FUNG visited our Corporate member – Intertek Hong Kong on 14th Dec 2023. We visited its super lab and shared their recent development of innovative ATIC solutions. Thanks for the arrangement of Hebe S. MA – Director of Marketing, Greater China, Dorothy M.Y. LAU – VP of Toys and Hardlines and Dr. Winner LO – GM of Softline.
  • Your Chairman – Dr. Jane WONG and Exco members are invited by Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Racing Laboratory in Shatin to visit the racing laboratory on 16th April 2024, and we presented our Corporate Membership Certificate to Dr. Emmie HO (Chief Racing Chemist), she also introduced the history and doping control test services of racing laboratory to us.
  • Your organization organized a technical visit to Smart Industrial Museum at Qianhai, Shenzhen on 21st June 2024. This is the museum in SmartMore which is a pioneer of intelligent manufacturing technology company. The museum demonstrated various intelligent manufacturing technologies e.g. high-speed autofocus code scanner, visual sensor for part detection / defect detection, with the application of their self-developed decoding and detection algorithm.

6. Student Project Competition

Since the economy environment changed and Covid 19 pandemic, it was difficult to find a company sponsor. HKSQ company-based student project competition has been suspended for the past years.

7. Publications

HKSQ Newsletters for October 2023, January 2024, April 2024 & July 2024 were distributed to members to update the past and forthcoming activities. Moreover, the Highlight for 2023 has distributed to members in February 2024.

8. Social Event

A social event named “Walking Tour to points of Interest in Sham Shui Po” led by Mr. CP CHOW (Former Chairman) on 06th Jan 2024, and “Walking trail on Tung O Ancient Trail (東澳古道) from Tai O to Yat Tung Estate” led by Dr. Jane WONG (Chairman) on 29th Mar 2024.

9. Government Funded Project

No any project.

Section D. Networking

International/ Regional:

  • Jane WONG (Chairman) met CEO and Chair of Hong Kong Branch of The Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) to discuss the cooperation between CQI and HKSQ on 19th April 2024.
  • Albert TSANG represents HKSQ on matters relating to ASQ.
  • KS CHIN represents HKSQ on matters relating to ANQ.
  • KS CHIN, Dr. Lotto LAI and Dr. Aaron TONG represents HKSQ on matters relating to WACQ.

Local / Mainland:

  • Jane WONG (Chairman) and Dr. Lotto LAI (former Chairman) represented HKSQ to attend the meeting for the 2023-2024 Award Scheme for Learning Experience (ASLE) (檢測及認證業學習體驗獎勵計劃甄選小組會議) for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) held on 27th July 2023.
  • The 1st Promotion and Consultation Subcommittee meeting of Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 28th Nov 2023. Dr. Jane WONG (Chairman), Ms. Angela WONG (Vice Chairman) and Dr. Lotto LAI (former Chairman) attended the meeting.
  • The annual working meeting of World Alliance of Chinese Quality (全球華人品質聯盟) was held on 29th Mar 2024. The meeting was held online with representatives from Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Your former Chairman – Lotto LAI and Minda represented HKSQ attending this meeting. CAQ proposed the 9th World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) to be held on 29 to 31 Aug 2024 in Chengdu, Sichuan (四川成都), the theme is “Sustainable Quality Management based on Chinese Culture (以中華文化為底蘊的可持續質量管理之道)”,
  • Lotto LAI was invited by HKCTC as a member of the panel on manpower development in 2024.
  • Jane WONG (Chairman) and Dr. Aaron TONG (former Chairman) were invited by Professor Howard CHEUNG to provide Career Talk for Industrial Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) of the University of Hong Kong students on 12th Apr 2024, we introduced your organization and TQM (our Corporate member) how to support students for preparing themselves before graduate.
  • Jane WONG (Chairman) and Dr. Lotto LAI (former Chairman) represented HKSQ to attend the 15thmeeting of Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under the Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 15th May 2024.

Section E. Service to the Community

  • The Society served as a mentor in the SUCCESS Mentorship Program. (Represented by Dr. Aaron TONG)
  • The Society served as a member of the HKQF for the TIC Industry Training Advisory Committee. (Represented by Dr. Lotto LAI and Dr. Jane WONG)
  • The Society served as a member of the Promotion and Consultation Subcommittee meeting of the Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under HKQF. (Represented by Dr. Lotto LAI & Dr. Jane WONG)
  • The Society served as a member of the HKCTC panel on manpower development in 2024. (Represented by Dr. Lotto LAI)

Section F. Internet Communication Groups

We continued to make use of Social Media such as Facebook and LinkedIn to share quality related information with quality practitioners worldwide. (Remark: Access success after login the social media account)

Here, we are thankful for the participation and support from members, partners and sponsors who made the above events successful.

Last but not least, I am sincerely grateful for the contributions of the Executive Committee during the pandemic period from 2023 to 2024. More on-site and online activities (e.g. webinars) and workshops will be planned and arranged in coming years. Without your kind contribution in planning and implementation, our administration and the above activities would not be performed successfully. We will continue our quality and innovation journey.
