I am pleased to report that we have had another eventful year ¡V a video show, four seminars, two works visits, and a training course were organized by the Society during the last financial year. These events were well received by our members and participants from the local industries. All these would not have been possible without the unfailing support of the members of the Executive Committee, to whom I am most thankful.

The Society has continued to maintain a close working relationship with the American Society for Quality Control and provided proctors for all their certification examinations held in Hong Kong in recent years. We are very grateful to Messrs Warner Yeh and C.W. Chu who have regularly served as proctors for these examinations.

Over the past few years, we have established ourselves as one of the major institutions representing professionals working in quality related functions and having an interest in promoting quality in Hong Kong. On account of this status, your Society was honoured to be invited as one of the sponsors of a 2-day seminar on ¡§Process Control & Product Quality Improvement Using Statistical Methods¡¨ scheduled for 29-30 June 1992. Several world renowned experts from the US, including Dr. George E.P. Box from University of Wisconsin, will be the speakers at the seminar. The other co-sponsors of the event are: International Statistical Institute, Hong Kong Quality Circles Association, City Polytechnic¡¦s Applied Statistics & Operational Research Department, and Operational Research Society of Hong Kong.

The active role we play on the local scene in the promotion of quality management also bears fruit in increasing our membership. The count of members on our register has already exceeded 200. We will continue our drive in the future to further expand our membership.

Listing of Activites

  • Seminar on ¡§ISO 9000 Assessment & Registration – the local Experience¡¨ presented by Mr. K.L. Yeung of Hong Kong Productivity Council and Mr. Michael Shu of Electronic Devices Ltd. This was organized jointly with the Quality & Reliability Centre, Hong Kong Polytechnic on July 25, 1991. The event, attended by about 100 participants, was a big success.

(b) Work Visits

  • Visit to Hong Kong Productivity Council on December 7, 1991
  • Visit to Motorola Semiconductors Hong Kong Ltd., Silicon Harbour Centre, Tai Po on November 2, 1991.

(c) Training Courses

  • A 20-hour training course on ¡§Total Quality Management¡¨ was conducted from April 11 to May 17, 1991. The 30 places planned for the course were filled quickly. It was highly rated by the participants. In view of the continuing demand for TQM training, a similar training course was offered again during the period from April 1 to June 3, 1992. Following the track record of its predecessor, the second TQM course was also oversubscribed and positively commended by its participants.
  • In this July, we are going to offer a 16-hour training course on ¡§Statistical Process Control¡¨. Judging from the enrolment so far, the course proves to have addressed an area of significant training need in Hong Kong industries.

In the year ahead, your Society will continue to promote quality awareness, organize learned society activities in the quality function, and provide a wider range of services to members. The success of these efforts will rely on the dedication and commitment of all the members of the Executive Committee as well as your active participation.
