The Chairman’s Report (1997/1998 session)

The officers and members of the 1997/1998 Executive Committee for the year ending 30 June 1998 are as follows:

I am pleased to report that we have had another successful year for the 1997/98 session. Various activities, including seminars, training courses, and visits were organized by the society during the last session. These events were well received by our members and the participants from both local manufacturing and service industries. The total number of participants was more than 500.
The Society has worked with other quality professional bodies to further promote a greater awareness of the need for quality in Hong Kong and the state-of-the-art concepts and techniques in quality management and engineering aspects. Collaborative activities included jointly organized seminars/workshops, international conference, student project competition, government-funded project, etc.Listing of activities held in 1997/1998 session

A. Seminars

  • Seminar on “Document Management – from Paper to Intranet”, 10 Nov 97, with 30 participants.
  • Seminar on “Employee Empowered Quality Improvement”, 22 Dec 97, with 77 participants.
  • Seminar on “Strategic Quality Development in China”, 12 Jan 98, with 47 participants.
  • Workshop on “Effective Product Development in Response to Dynamic and Fuzzy Market Demand”, 30, 31 Mar 98, with 40 participants.
  • Seminar on “UMIST TQM Implementation Framework for Hong Kong Manufacturing Industries”, 4, 5 May 98, with 80 participants.

B. Technical Visits

  • 30 members visited Universal Car Company on 14 Nov 97.
  • 19 members visited Housing Department on 22 Nov 97.
  • 16 members visited the new Chek Lap Kok Airport on 10 Jan 98.
  • 25 members visited Salisbury YMCA of Hong Kong on 28 Mar 98.
  • 10 members visited the new Air Cargo Terminal (HACTL) at the new Chek Lap Kok Airport on 3 Apr 98.

C. Membership Drive

Quality Profession Seminars, 24 Apr 98 at City University of Hong Kong and 27 April 98 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with a total of 150 participants.

D. Other Major Activities

  • The Society was one of the professional bodies supporting the 2nd International Conference on Quality and Reliability (ICQR’97), held in Hong Kong in Sep 97.
  • The Society was one of the professional bodies supporting the 1997 Quality Management Student Project Competition organized by the Quality & Reliability Centre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Mr. W O Lee, our Executive Committee Member, served as a member of the judging panel.
  • The Society continued to be the proctor of the ASQ Certified Quality Manager/CRE/CQE/CQA examinations held in Hong Kong. The contribution made by Messrs Albert Tsang and Karson Chui in serving as proctors of these examinations is appreciated.
  • The Society, together with City University of Hong Kong and other eight Hong Kong quality professional bodies, has successfully got a 1998 HKSAR Industrial Support Fund of HK$3.5 million for a 3-year project titled “Developing Educational Materials to encourage and facilitate Hong Kong manufacturers for quality transformation”. The Society will participate as one of the project management team members.
  • The Society supported a 3-day workshop organized by the Shenzhen Quality Management Association in the topic of “Strategic Quality Deployment”, Shenzhen, 1-3 April 98.
  • The Chairman visited the Shanghai Quality Management Association, Shanghai on 8 Jun 98 to introduce HKSQ to the Shanghai quality professionals.

We continued to maintain a healthy financial position in last session. Our Executive Committee has had 8 meetings for the 1997/98 session. My sincere thanks go to the members of the Executive Committee whose dedication and commitment are essential to the success of our activities.
